A Thousand Pebbles: Mikela Ronning-Philip isn’t your ordinary senior. “I do not do old,” she says, “Aging is a state of mind.”
This athletic 88-year-old works out at a gym most days and last year she undertook a new challenge. The result is “A Thousand Pebbles” a collection of poetry she wrote over many years, in the quiet middle of the night. Mikela penned a blend of lost and found love, the darkness of conflict, and the beauty of nature – an important theme in her life.
Mikela photographed the picture featured on the book cover herself – stones that form a pathway outside her front door – and sprinkled among the verses are pictures of colourful work, painted by her artistic daughter and grand-daughters.
Mikela’s life has taken her across the world and back. Born in England, she grew up as a young baby on the edge of the Egyptian desert. Her fascination with words began early; at the age of four she was reading the newspaper and was close to trilingual.
An individualist, she went to France shortly after the war ended and at just 19, began running a youth hostel.
There she spent many hours talking with others who were wandering through Europe, as well as with shell-shocked young pilots and servicemen, an experience which would eventually influence her later career specializing as a PTSD counsellor.
